402_SamrtSurface_Hands on making



























We like last groups' idea about light on the elevation of the house. And we further develop it to light fence on the boundary of the site to provide dynamic  interactive events between passersby and our smart surface. 

Besides interactive behaviors as below:
  • following people's speed
  • leading direction
  • warning-change the color
the light bunches also have self behaviors:
  • blink one by one every few second (whole bunch)
  • blink individually, no connection with other bunches.

203_SmartSurface_Visual effect of sliding

















I am interested in the visual effect when human activities involve with original object. What will happen? In this case, when people begin to slide and rotate the surface, how the function will perform? What effect will be created ? The effects we design are illustrated in the diagrams.

  • Summer: white side face out during the day. All slides will be perpendicular to the sun light angle. In this way, the surface can help reflect light and keep the house cool.
  • Winter: During the winter, the black side will face out in the day. This will absorb heat and release later when rotate to interior during night.
  • Horizontal: when keep the slide angle to be horizontal, people can see through the slides to enjoy the view outside.
  • Vertical: while if keep all slides to be vertical, the surface is fully closed and protect privacy. 
  • Other angles: with different combination of b/w side and slide angles, we can control the light coming through, heat absorb and release and the view seen through the window.

We get SLIDING, HEATING, ANNUALLY this week. To address both heating issue and sliding effect, we create a surface with black/white sides to absorb and release heat by sliding and rotating. Idea is clear, but it required many work in wood shop to make each part slides since if anything is thicker than the channel, it would get stuck during sliding.
